Minimum wage standard

Nearly 4500 garment factories in Bangladesh must raise their minimum wage to 3000 Tucca ($43) per month, while the minimum wage for Bangladesh clothing workers in 2006 is 1662 Taka.

Labor and Employment Minister Khondaker Musharraf Hussein said that if employers fail to meet the new wage standards, they will be subject to legal sanctions.

In addition, enterprises should pay bonus to workers.

In July 27th this year, a Wage Commission appointed by the government negotiated with the representatives of garment manufacturers and trade unions to set up the new wage standard.

Some ILO believes that the salary increase can not completely improve the quality of life of workers, but also can not keep up with the pace of inflation.

In Bangladesh, about 3 million people are engaged in the garment industry.

The South Asian country, which has a population of 150 million, ranks among the world's largest exporters of clothing in recent years.

Clothing exports account for 80% of the country's total exports.
